Meta Review: Non-stop Dogwear Dog Rescue Sling

Lightweight and compact for the trail. What do external tests and customer experiences tell us about carrying comfort and fit?

    The verdict at a glance

A compact emergency aid that is easy to take with you. The main trade-off: low weight and a small packed size versus limited carrying comfort and adjustability.

What do you take with you in case your dog cannot continue on a walk or hike? For this Meta Review, we compare an external hands-on test, customer experiences and manufacturer information. Our aim is to help you make an informed decision before buying; we have not tested the sling ourselves for this article.

    • Strengths: lightweight, compact and simple in design.
    • Points to consider: narrow, unpadded carrying straps and limited adjustment.
    • Uncertain: comfort during prolonged carrying and performance in a range of real emergency situations.

What is the Dog Rescue Sling?

Non-stop Dogwear developed this emergency carrier together with the Norwegian Search and Rescue Dog Association. It has four leg openings and no designated front or back. According to the manufacturer, sizes S–XL weigh 168–232 grams, excluding the storage bag. The size chart combines the dog's weight with the distance between its legs. The carrying straps have no sliding adjusters; they are shortened by tying knots. [1]

Weight and packed size: the clearest advantage

Compactness and ease of carrying are recurring themes in customer reviews on Varuste. Several customers have only tried the sling at home or have not used it yet. This mainly supports its appeal as practical kit to keep in a backpack; it does not automatically demonstrate suitability for a lengthy evacuation. [2]

On Chewy, one user describes how a previous emergency prompted her to look for a lightweight carrying solution for backpacking trips. Its compact size means the sling now comes along as standard. This account concerns choosing and carrying the sling; it does not establish that it was used in the earlier rescue. [3]

Our interpretation: packed size is an important buying consideration for emergency equipment. An aid is only useful on the trail if you actually have it with you.

    Carrying comfort: the main compromise

Dog Gear Review highlights the unpadded straps and limited adjustment as points to consider, particularly with a heavier dog. In its hands-on test, however, the sling provided stable support. [4] Customers on Varuste also report narrow straps and discomfort. On the other hand, there is a positive account involving a 40 kg dog. That is an individual experience, not a guarantee for every dog or person carrying one. [2]

Our interpretation: distinguish between “I can lift my dog” and “I can carry my dog comfortably over this distance”. The first tells you little about the second. Your own ability to carry the weight and the conditions remain crucial.

Fit and durability: no universal conclusion

Dog Gear Review's test dog, Zulu, has a slender build and a deep chest; the sling fitted him well. Dora clarified that Zulu weighs 13 kg, placing him towards the lighter end of the sling's size range. This is useful practical information, but it covers just one body shape and a relatively light dog. [4]

Varuste also includes a critical review reporting tight leg openings and concerns about the seams. We take that report seriously, but this limited evidence cannot establish a general durability problem — nor can it prove long-term reliability. [2]

Check the size against the manufacturer's guidance and practise at home using the instructions. Non-stop also recommends practising before you need it. [1]

Who do we think it suits?

For walkers and hikers who want to carry a lightweight emergency aid, the trade-off makes sense. Anyone who already expects to carry their dog regularly or for prolonged periods would do well to give comfort and adjustability greater weight.

Drookit Dogs Meta Verdict: the Rescue Sling appears to be a useful addition to your emergency kit. Choose it deliberately for its small packed size and accept the limitations of its minimalist design. The available experiences do not justify a blanket promise of safe or comfortable transport for every dog, injury or distance.

    Sources & methodology

Drookit Dogs sells this product. This is an analysis of external sources, not our own hands-on test or a statistical meta-analysis. We do not award a numerical rating or an average star score. Manufacturer information describes the design; customer experiences and one external test provide limited practical context. Not every positive review relates to actual use in an emergency.

    1. Non-stop Dogwear — product details, size chart and usage information.
    2. Varuste — customer reviews. According to Varuste, only customers who have purchased the product can submit a review.
    3. Chewy — a user's backpacking experience. We do not treat this account as a verified rescue test.
    4. Dog Gear Review — hands-on test dated 21 August 2025. The author discloses a free test product and affiliate links; we therefore describe this as an external test, rather than a demonstrably commercially independent source.
