Our verdict at a glance
A specialist pulling harness where fit matters more than reputation. Experiences are positive about comfort and finish, but choosing the right size and adjusting it properly require attention.
The Freemotion 5.0 is an interesting option for people who take part in pulling sports with their dogs. For this Meta Review, we compare manufacturer information, an external comparison of the 5.0 and customer experiences. We have not tested this harness ourselves for the article.
- Strengths: an adjustable design, a padded neck opening and positive experiences when pulling.
- Points to consider: the neck opening, size selection and putting the harness on and taking it off.
- The deciding factor: how the harness fits your dog when the line is under tension.
What is the Freemotion 5.0 designed for?
According to Non-stop Dogwear, this is a pulling harness for activities with a high line attachment point, such as canicross, bikejoring and skijoring. The Y-shaped front, padded neck opening and adjustable straps are intended to combine freedom of movement with support. That is the manufacturer's design intention; it does not prove that every dog moves optimally in this model. [1]
Fit: where experiences differ
On Varuste, positive accounts of fit appear alongside complaints about a tight neck opening or an unsuitable size despite following the size chart. Other customers report a good fit on dogs with different body shapes. This does not support a simple rule such as “this harness always runs small”. [2]
In its comparison with the previous model, Dog Gear Review describes how the extra padding in the 5.0 can make the neck opening feel tighter. Dora clarified that both versions use the same size guide: the thicker padding only makes sizing up necessary for dogs at the upper end of their original size range. After trying a larger size, she returned to her dog’s original size: it fitted better when he was pulling. [3]
Our interpretation: difficulty putting a harness on and a poor fit when pulling are not necessarily the same problem. Do not choose solely on the basis of how easily it slips over the dog's head. A larger size can change the proportions elsewhere.
Comfort when pulling
In Dog Gear Review's 5.0 comparison, the harness stayed in place on the test dog, including during turns. That is a specific observation involving one dog. [3] Customers on Varuste mention comfort, low weight and a well-made finish, among other things. These experiences are useful, but they do not tell you whether the size and adjustment are right for your dog. [2]
Our interpretation: assess a pulling harness as a combination of dog, harness and activity. A positive review is a reason to consider the model, not a substitute for trying it on and observing movement.
Adjusting and putting it on: take your time
One Varuste customer describes how the initial adjustment took time and instructional videos, after which using the harness became straightforward. In the more extensive review list, other customers describe putting it on and taking it off as difficult. [2] [4]
The manufacturer asks owners to check the fit with the dog standing and the harness held in a pulling position. This includes the position of the chest piece, clearance around the armpits, the position of the side straps and the attachment point at the base of the tail. Follow the current fitting instructions for this. [1]
Our interpretation: adjustability offers flexibility, but makes careful fitting part of the purchase. If you are unsure, assessing the dog in the harness is more helpful than relying on a size label or breed name alone.
Quality and durability: what do we know?
Customers regularly speak positively about the finish and materials. However, the experiences we consulted vary considerably in duration and intensity of use. They cannot provide a reliable prediction of service life. We also do not automatically treat favourable findings about the original Freemotion model as test results for the 5.0.
Drookit Dogs Meta Verdict
The Freemotion 5.0 is a convincing candidate for pulling sports, provided it suits your dog and is carefully adjusted. The experiences give us more reason to focus on fit than to rely blindly on an overall judgement of quality.
For those who mainly enjoy relaxed walks or want a harness that is quick to put on and take off, we would start by considering the intended use. For a dog that actively pulls out in front, the specialised design becomes more relevant. The best choice is the harness that works for that dog and that activity.

Drookit Dogs sells this product. This article is a synthesis of external information, not our own hands-on test or a statistical meta-analysis. We do not give an average star score. We use manufacturer information for the design and intended use, and practical experiences for benefits and limitations. The selection is not representative of all users.

- Dog Gear Review — comparison of the original Freemotion and the 5.0, 5 October 2022. This is one external test source. The original Freemotion review (older model, not the 5.0) is included only as background; its findings are not treated as test results for the 5.0. That original review discloses a free test product and affiliate links; we therefore do not present the site as demonstrably commercially independent.
